Untangling Family History

1. What I provide

Untangling Family History provides professional family history and genetic genealogy research, including documentary research, DNA interpretation, written reports, and one-to-one consultations. All work is carried out with care, professional judgement, and respect for living people.

2. Research outcomes

Family history research depends on the survival and accessibility of records. While every reasonable effort will be made to find the information you request, some records may be missing, damaged, incomplete, or never created. For this reason, specific results cannot be guaranteed.

Time spent researching, analysing, and reporting is chargeable even if a particular record or answer cannot be found.

3. Scope of work

All work has a defined scope, whether it is a package, a session, or a bespoke project. This includes the people or family lines being researched, the number of generations, and the type of work to be carried out.

Any work outside the agreed scope will only be undertaken with your consent and may require a revised fee.

4. Payment

Payment terms will be agreed before work begins. Packages and sessions are usually paid in advance. Bespoke projects may be paid in stages or with a deposit.

Once work has started, payments are not refundable, as professional time and resources will have been committed.

5. Travel, accommodation, and records

Where research requires travel to archives or repositories beyond the local area, the cost of travel and, where necessary, accommodation will be agreed with you in advance and added to the project cost.

Copies of certificates, archive documents, and other record charges are supplied at cost price and added to the project total.

If exact record costs cannot be known in advance, they will be deducted from the agreed research budget and the amount of research adjusted accordingly.

There are no hidden or unexpected charges.

6. DNA and sensitive cases

Genetic genealogy, adoption, donor conception, and unknown parentage work involves sensitive personal information. All DNA-based work is carried out with care, consent, and respect for privacy. I will not contact living people without your agreement and a clear ethical framework.

7. Confidentiality

All client information, family details, and DNA data are treated as confidential and will not be shared without your permission, except where required by law.

8. Use of reports

Research reports are provided for your personal use. They may not be resold, published, or shared publicly without permission.

9. Changes and cancellation

If you need to cancel before work begins, you may do so without charge. Once work has started, fees are payable for time and costs already incurred.

10. Questions and concerns

If you have any questions about your project, scope, or costs, you are encouraged to ask. Clear communication is part of ethical, professional research.
